It all starts with a simple photo that has enough color variety, focus, and a source of light.  In this case, a picture of my cat, Sirius Black (and White) that I took on my iPhone.  In Photoshop, I'll do a little color correction: adjust levels, brighten, overexpose and then crank the saturation to create a variety of vibrant colors - and save it.
